Hypoparathyroidism is when your blood calcium level is low because your parathyroid glands (in the neck) don’t produce enough of the PTH (parathyroid hormone). Sometimes called Hypopara for short, it can have different causes, but the most common is due to removal of (or injury to) the parathyroid glands – especially during surgery.
Though it is a rare health condition, for those with Hypoparathyroidism it can mean frequent blood tests and a “balancing act” to keep the amount of key vitamins and minerals like calcium and vitamin D in the normal range. In fact, “calcium crashes” – sudden drops in calcium – can land you in the ER.
There is a very wide range of symptoms, from tingling and muscle cramps/weakness to dry skin and hair loss – even seizures, all because Hypoparathyroidism can affect many of the body’s systems.
The AVAIL study is now assessing an investigational medication (in the form of PT hormone replacement or PTH) to see if it can help. More specifically, researchers want to see if it can provide a safe and effective alternative to taking supplements (like vitamin D and calcium) in order to keep blood calcium levels in a normal range.
Rest assured that even if you choose to enroll, you may still leave the study at any time, for any reason. Act now to see if you may qualify!

AcurianHealth helps connect people with research studies that offer treatment under
development.
Since 1998, AcurianHealth has referred 1 million study candidates to 800 studies in 70 countries.
*In a research study, the participants may receive investigational study product or may receive an inactive substance, or placebo, depending on the study design. Participants receive study-related care from a doctor/research team for the duration of the study. For studies that offer compensation, reasonable payments will be made for participation. The length of the study may vary.
